How Long Do Instagram Stories Last? Timing, Archive, Viewers and Highlights

2026-09-03 · 5 min read · By the View Story team

An Instagram story is visible for 24 hours from the moment it is posted, after which it disappears from your profile and from the story bar at the top of your followers' feeds. That is the headline rule, and it has not changed since stories launched. Around it are a few other clocks worth knowing.

The 24-hour window

Each story slide has its own timer. If you post one slide at 9:00 and another at 21:00, the first expires at 9:00 the next day and the second twelve hours later. Posting a new slide does not extend the older ones.

How long the viewer list lasts

You can see who viewed a story while it is live. After it expires, the viewer list remains available from your archive for a limited time, then only the total count stays in insights. If you want the names, look while the story is still up.

Where expired stories go

By default every story is saved to your private archive the moment it expires. Only you can see the archive. From there you can re-share a story, add it to a highlight or delete it. If you turned archive saving off in settings, expired stories are gone and cannot be recovered by Instagram or anyone else.

Keeping a story longer than 24 hours

Add it to a highlight. A highlighted story stays on your profile indefinitely, keeps its original date and can be viewed by the same audience the original story had. Close Friends stories stay restricted to the list even inside a highlight.

Keeping someone else's story

If the account is public, the story can be saved before it expires with an Instagram story downloader. View Story shows the live stories of a public profile and puts a Download button on each one; the original photo or video is saved to your device with no watermark. Once the 24 hours are up and the story is not in a highlight, no tool can bring it back.

Other timers people ask about

  • Story replies and reactions: they land in DMs and stay like any message.
  • Story mentions: the person you mention can re-share your story to their own, but only while yours is live.
  • "Add Yours" and music stickers: they expire with the story they are attached to.
  • Insights: professional accounts can see story metrics for 14 days after posting, longer for aggregated numbers.
  • Live videos: a live is not a story. It ends when you stop streaming; you can share a replay to your feed or profile afterwards.

Can you change the duration?

No. Instagram does not offer 12-hour or 48-hour stories. The only ways to shorten a story are to delete it, and the only way to lengthen it is a highlight.
