Short answer: no. Instagram does not notify anyone when you screenshot or screen-record a story, a post, a reel or a profile. It briefly tested story screenshot alerts in 2018 and dropped the feature after a few months. Nothing has changed since.
The one exception: disappearing DMs
There is exactly one place where Instagram still tells the other person: disappearing photos and videos sent in a direct message, the ones sent in "view once" or "allow replay" mode, and anything sent in vanish mode. Screenshot one of those and the sender sees a small notice in the chat. A story shared into a DM does not count; only media captured in the DM camera does.
What about a story someone sent me?
If a friend shares a public story with you in a DM and you screenshot it, nobody is notified. The story owner cannot see it, and neither can the friend who sent it.
Does the story owner see anything at all?
They see that you viewed the story, if you were logged in when you opened it. That is the only trace. Screenshotting adds nothing to it. If you want to avoid even the view, you would need to watch the story without your account, for instance through an anonymous story viewer for public profiles.
Why screenshots are a poor way to save a story anyway
A screenshot gives you the story cropped to your screen, with the username bar on top and the reply box at the bottom, at your phone's resolution and compressed. Video becomes a still frame. If you actually want to keep the story, you want the original file.
That is what a story downloader provides: the photo or video as it was uploaded, with sound, without the interface and without a watermark. On View Story every story card has a Download button, and because no account is used, the owner is not told that the story was viewed or saved.
Quick reference
- Screenshot a story: no notification.
- Screen-record a story: no notification.
- Screenshot a post, reel or profile: no notification.
- Screenshot a disappearing photo or video in a DM: notification sent.
- Screenshot a story someone shared with you in a DM: no notification.
Will this change?
Possibly; Instagram tests features constantly. If screenshot alerts for stories ever return, they would show up as a visible change in the app and be widely reported within hours. As of October 2026, they are not there.
